Publication Design stuffs

Last week we had to turn in an identity package for a made up company that included a logo sheet, business card, letterhead, and envelope. We had to create the logo for our made up company as well. I built my camera logo in illustrator and added depth with lines of various strokes.

SRRG Recruitment flier revisions

Took ye olde flier above and made some much needed revisions. This flier was hand drawn by a member of the team and scanned in and then sent out to everyone for distribution. I was contacted this weekend with new information for the flier and I also decided to change it all to black and white.

I did a live trace in illustrator and that got rid of the yellow background, but also left some of the lines very thin. I went in and changed the stroke of most of the lines to make everything stand out a littler more. I added our website address and some update information. Below is the result.

Publication Design Event Poster

For publication design, our first assignment was to create an event poster. It is suppose to draw people in and be legible from at least 5 feet away because most people will be walking by it. We did 4 roughs before choosing a design for the poster. According to the teacher and the class, the poster wasn't as successful as it could have been. My teacher said to choose a background color other than white and text that is easier to read.

Our next assignment is an identity package. We have to create a logo and use that logo on a letterhead, business card, and envelope. This project is due on Wednesday so I'll probably post the assignment later this week.

Advertising Strategy and Tactics

For our first assignment we had to create two ads for the same product. I chose Diet Dr. Pepper. In the first ad, I used what is called a bent image. When using a bent image, you want the picture to draw the person in. In the second ad I used a bent headline. The headline is what is suppose to make the person stop on that ad. All in all, Groth thought these were pretty successful and they could probably be used as a campaign.

Our next assignment is to create a spread for Everlast. I'll post the final product sometime next week.

Santa Rosa Arts and Culture Foundation (SRACF)

I ended up working at the SRACF on Friday for about six hours. I downloaded new software to their computer and helped them get started on a few things that they needed. We started printing out fliers and stickers to promote "Family Reunion."

I'm in the beginning stages of the playbill for "Family Reunion." It is a little frustrating because they want me to build it in Microsoft Publisher so they can open it on their computer and do any necessary edits.

I talked to the PR/Publicity Chairman for SRACF/Dragonfly Gallery. She has a strong 'printers' background and she said she would like to teach me on the side. The President of the SRACF is going to be training me in various areas of print/advertising as well. It's exciting to be learning from two people who have a lot of experience.

On a side note, I will be posting some work from my Advertising Strategy & Tactics class and my Publication Design class later this week.

that time i forgot...

So I haven't had a single blog post since this class started at the end of August. Oops.

Here's the plan:

I'm working with the Santa Rosa Arts and Culture Foundation on publications. The most current is a playbill for "Family Reunion." It's going to be a quick project because the play is the first weekend in October and they just asked me to work on it Friday, September 3. After I finish this project, I'll be working on publications for the Dragonfly Gallery and the SRACF in general. They also asked me to help with the website on the side, although what I do with it is very limited because they are very attached to the colors and layout.

This is going to be a long term thing as in I'll be continuing on with them after I graduate. I think it's exciting because I really would like to help promote the arts in Santa Rosa County.

I am also working with the Santa Rosa Rollergirls, a local roller derby team in Milton. I used to skate with them and I am now their current Creative Director. Since they just started up, they haven't exactly told me everything that entails. I did a program for their bout in July and a few recruitment posters in May but other than that, I haven't had much to do. Things should start picking up around October with the possibility of a Halloween themed bout. This is also a long term deal and I'll still be working with them after I graduate as well.

Other than that I'll have a lot of projects for my other classes: Advertising Strategy and Tactics & Publication Design. I'll try to remember to post projects on the blog for everything I do.
